At New Wave Dental Smiles our main priority is making sure our patients have not only a beautiful smile, but a healthy smile. Gum disease, also known as periodontitis or gingivitis, is one of the most common threats to dental health.
Periodontal Maintenance
Our West Seattle dentist and dental hygienist offers periodontal maintenance in addition to routine cleaning. Patients diagnosed with periodontitis undergo periodontal therapy such as deep cleanings or gum grafting. Patients with periodontitis should see a dental hygienist every 3-4 months.
Gum Disease
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of bacteria in your mouth. The following are the stages it typically progresses through:
- Gingivitis: This form of gum disease is not defined with any bone loss or tissue detachment. The gum tissue is red and puffy but can be treated and usually reversed with daily flossing and brushing.
- Periodontal Disease: Also known as periodontitis, this occurs if gingivitis goes untreated. Periodontal disease does include the detachment of tissue and bone loss. The spaces between teeth and bone are called “pockets.” These pockets should be measured once a year by your dentist.
Signs of both gingivitis and periodontitis include but are not limited to:
- Red and puffy gum tissue
- Bleeding gum,
- Chronic bad breath
- Loose teeth
- Painful chewing
- Receding gum lines
